I Used to Think Networking Was Bullsh*t
Because, honestly, it was.
At least how I was doing it.
I’d show up at events.
Talk to random people.
Walk away with nothing.
Felt like playing business instead of doing business.
Here’s what I missed:
Networking only works if you’re someone worth knowing.
When You’re a Beginner, Networking is Mostly Useless
At the beginning, I had:
No skills
No results
No confidence
Just enough delusion to start
So I did what most people won’t:
I put my head down and built.
For 18 months:
No meetups.
No Zoom chats.
Just work.
Eventually, something changed.
I started meeting different people.
Better people.
People I actually wanted to become.
Why?
Because I had changed.
My skillset changed.
My value changed.
Here’s the truth:
You attract what you are.
Not what you want.
So better people showed up.
But I missed the signal.
I thought the answer was: “Just keep working harder.”
So I did.
Head even lower.
Grind even deeper.
And I worked myself into the wrong direction.
Then I woke up.
I realized I had enough proof.
Enough value.
Enough leverage.
Now, I could partner.
I could collaborate.
I could recruit.
Not because I was great - but because I was finally useful.
Networking Is Like Dating
Early on, you’re not a catch.
You just think you are.
So you don’t get quality options - in business or life.
But once you become valuable, the game flips.
Now, I’m taking founder calls.
Having real conversations.
Meeting mentors.
Building partnerships.
Not because I “network”,
But because I’m solving problems interesting enough that smart people want to join.
Lesson:
Don’t network to get ahead.
Get ahead so networking works.
What’s Next?
Apple is being painfully slow with their approval process, but the good news is, I have plenty of early tester sign ups for GolfWink.
I can’t wait to actually get this thing live!
Stay productive,
Ben
