The Truth About Motivation That No One Talks About

Relying only on motivation can end you...

I’m also on Medium - check that out if you prefer 🙂 also free for you!

This one is about motivation, and what to do when you have none left. If that doesn't interest you, I'll see you next week - there, just saved you 5 minutes.

Yesterday morning, I lay in bed, listening to the alarm which had been ringing for the past ten minutes. My mind was stuck in a loop, repeating "why should I get up?"

Here's the truth they don't tell you in those glossy YC interviews and startup school sessions: entrepreneurship is as much an emotional battle as an intellectual one.

One day, you're on top of the world, certain your idea will revolutionize writing. The next, you're questioning every decision you've ever made and want to hide in a hole where no-one can find you.

If you don't expect these moments, they can take you out of the game for good. High stress and pressure can cloud your judgment and stop you from progressing when you need to most. It's like rolling a boulder uphill, but the more tired you get, the heavier the boulder feels.

So, what should you do? First, take a deep breath. These fluctuations are normal. You're not failing; you're experiencing a natural human reaction to uncertainty.

Next, consider your motivations. It can be money, mission, fame, freedom, whatever got you started in the first place. Remember, at each fluctuation there will be others who quit. You are not one of them.

But perhaps the most crucial piece of advice I can offer is this: build your support system. In those moments when self-doubt creeps in (and trust me, it will), having a network of mentors, fellow entrepreneurs, or even just understanding friends can make all the difference. They're the voice of reason when your own inner monologue turns into a critics' chorus.

These mentors can be real, fake, dead, or alive. Most of my mentors are people on Youtube, who I spend most of my free time with. They keep me going because I am reminded that what I'm going through is normal.

Remember, business isn't a sprint; it's a marathon with hurdles, unexpected turns, and the occasional brick wall. But with each obstacle you overcome, you're not just building a business—you're building resilience, wisdom, and becoming more like the type of person who becomes a successful entrepreneur.

So the next time you find yourself staring at the ceiling, questioning every life choice that led you to this moment, remember: you'll tell this story someday. And when you move forward in spite of the failures, you'll be stronger, wiser, and one step closer to that vision that got you started in the first place.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go back to building my writing app (the one I used to write this passage).

WordRobin Update

The essay-writing feature is out! but no one has actually used it yet.

I just need to work on making things obvious. More obvious, easier to use, less friction.

Something I’m looking into is emotionally aware conversations.

Instead of clicking through things, you can actually have a conversation about what you’re looking to write about.

It’s too early to tell if this will work - I’m going to need some more people to test the feature first 😄

What’s next?

I’m going to focus on advertising! I need more people to try this thing out. 🙂

with love, Ben
