✴️ How I'm Making... #8
Disney, distractions, and destinations.

Keep going! It only takes one pivotal “yes”
Personally, I prefer to consume content over audio. Even when I read, I listen to the corresponding audiobook at 2x speed because it helps me retain information. So here’s an audio version of me reading the newsletter, just in case you’re the same way 🙂
I am as proud of the things we haven’t done as the things we have.
✏️ Personal Note

Last week was the least productive week I’ve had since starting life as an entrepreneur - I think it was because I started getting distracted by the ‘other’ things I had going on in my life.
I am currently going through a visa application process to be able to stay and work in the UK, and am also looking for a new place to move to. Each of these takes a little away from my attention. I am not freaking out about them which is something, but this really shows me the importance of keeping a clean mental shop.
It’s difficult enough to push one thing forward.
Multiple projects = split attention
📈 Lesson: Disney, Distractions, Destinations.
Yesterday, I had a chat with a product director from Disney.
She manages customer retention for one of Disney’s product arms, and contributes to the ‘magic’.
Here’s one example of a customer journey with some Disney magic:
A family purchases Frozen themed toys, or watches Frozen 253 times on Disney+
They book tickets to Orlando Disneyland with the same card or email
Their ticket/wristband is likely to have Frozen themed artwork
The Elsa cosplayer is notified when the family enters the park
The cosplayer spends extra time with the child
There’s nothing ground-breaking here. They have the data to see what people like, and give them more of it. The only disbelief I had was that this could happen at Disney’s scale.
I am convinced the real name of the game is prioritization.
Disney can afford to do everything because it is big - but it also got big by taking care of everything.
As we’re just starting out, we might just be able to do 1 thing well.
Getting good is not some secret. It’s doing every single thing that we know we should be doing, and doing it every single time.
🔗 Software: Custom AI Tools
AI is all the rage these days. Since most of us won’t be the next Sam Altman, I think it’s important to think about how we can use the tools we have.
Pickaxe makes that exploration much easier. Engineer a prompt through text, and build a widget that people can try out for free! Very simple.
What’s Next?
I found a passionate community manager who I will work with to develop SOPs and a lead magnet. Given my lack of experience in the field, educational content and lead magnets will probably be the way to push this thing forwards. We shall see!!
That’s all for now!
Remember to do the things you’ve been putting off - it might just be the very thing you need to push your project forwards.
Cheers,
Ben
