When will I learn? I keep repeating this

I apologize for missing last week’s issue!

“Impressing people is utterly different from being truly impressive.”

Ryan Holiday

Last week, I moved - it was an all-out effort for a full 4 days, cleaning and moving and throwing things out. When I had a moment to actually rest, it was already Monday. I decided not to bring it out late. I do apologize for missing a week, I promise it will not be a habit.

On a fun note, we are trying out what sponsored posts look like on this platform. I chose it because it was for a free AI workshop, so it’s directly relevant to what I’m focused on at the moment.

  • Finding mentors

  • Spending as investing

📈 Lesson 1: Finding Mentors

I had my first mentorship call with a paid mentor on Friday. He is an agency manager that focuses on narrative-driven community building.

A few short months ago, I didn’t think I needed a mentor. I felt that I knew what I needed to do, and didn’t need anyone to keep me accountable or push me further. That is, until I made the grave mistake of quitting while ahead (You can watch me talk about that in great detail here).

I am new to this too, but here are some things I considered when deciding whether to start working with a mentor.

  1. Is this person someone I wish to be more like?

“What would Jesus do?” This phrase has made the rounds because it’s simple yet effective. In any situation, we can ask this question and come to a reasonable conclusion about what Jesus would do. And since behaviour makes the person who they are, we can become more Jesus-like by asking and following this one question.

A mentor got to where they are by doing what they think is right. This means that if you follow their advice, you will end up more like them. Make sure you want that.

  1. Has this person been through what I’m about to?

A little while ago, I made a video about ex-convict entrepreneurs. I was sick with anxiety before I made it because I have no idea what it's actually like to be an ex-convict back in society. But I know business principles are universal enough to overrule any other pressures. So I made the video.

Finding a mentor is the same. It’s not about whether someone has grown up in the same household, or been through the same hardships as you. It’s about whether they can bring you closer to your goal. In my case, even through this person is not experienced with AI, they have built an agency. So I felt comfortable signing the dotted line.

  1. What special skill does this person have?

Everyone has a specialty. For me, it’s most likely teaching. For others it might be sales, marketing, or web-design. Whatever it is, try to absorb the specialty skill of your mentor. The person I chose is a master storyteller. They have worked on scripts for TV shows and movies. I’m looking forward to learning more about that.

📈 Lesson 2: Spending as Investing

I have a few towels with holes in them. I don’t care much about replacing them because they don’t take away from the functionality. I tend to be frugal in this way.

The only thing I don’t want to be frugal about is investing in learning. Anything I can buy to speed up the process of learning and progressing is worth splurging out on.

You are an investment vehicle. Like a video game character, you can spend resources to boost your stats. Make sure you are levelling up the right ones!
