✴️ How I'm Making... #12

STOP paying attention to this...

“When information is cheap, attention becomes expensive.”

James Gleick, The Information: A History, a Theory, a Flood

✏️ Summary

I finally feel like I’m back in action.

For the past couple of weeks, I’ve been struggling to make meaningful progress on my business.

I was struggling to understand why - was I too tired? Did switching businesses really impact my drive this much? Was this the dreaded BURNOUT everyone told me about? I had no answer.

But yesterday, after finally deciding to move into an extremely cheap flat, it all seemed to come back.

You see, even if I didn’t feel anxious about where I was going to move to, I still spent time thinking about it. This really brought into light two things.

  1. The weight of unmade decisions feels a lot like burnout

  2. Things are a lot easier when you don’t give yourself a choice

Let’s talk about each one.

📈 Lesson: The weight of unmade decisions feels a lot like burnout

When I was a kid, I used to love vending machines. Every weekend, after my weekly squash sessions, my mother would give me enough change to go and pick out a drink.

I wanted them all. So I would stand by the vending machine, agonizing over whether I wanted the blue powerade or the fizzy milk soda (don’t knock it till you’ve tried it!)

one of these bad boys

Indecision carries a cost. For 5 year old Ben, it ended up costing a few minutes in front of the vending machine. But for a solo founder, it can cost the growth of your company.

It’s useful for me to remember what this feels like - so I can recognize the feeling, and make the decision that I’ve been putting off.

But how do you actually make a decision?

📈 Lesson: Things are a lot easier when you don’t give yourself a choice

The thing that stops us from making the decision is often fear

We fear that if we make the wrong decision, we will not get the outcome we want.

A sneaky trick to make this fear go away?

You believe that no matter what - you can & will make it work.

It might sound cheesy, but if you actually believe this, and give yourself no way out, it makes life a lot simpler.

So, what are you doing this week?

What decisions will you make?

What’s Next?

Enough distractions, I can actually focus on what I need to do in order to make this thing work.

That’s all for now!

A bit shorter this week (stats say only a couple of people read this to the end anyways - if you’re reading this, your attention span is elite and I appreciate you)

Actually, if you’re reading this, I have a $300 gift for you. If you have a side hustle or a business idea and you want an outsider’s perspective (like this call), reply with the message “I want to call”.

Cheers,
